Low vision is common in the elderly, but increasing age is not the only cause of visual impairment. Problems with vision can affect children after birth. The commonest causes of registration of visual handicap are macular degeneration, glaucoma, cataract, diabetic retinopathy, atrophy of the optic nerve or some brain damage. Although, in most cases of blindness something is wrong with the eyes that, in a condition known as anophthalmia, are actually missing. Another inherited condition is albinism, also some children may become blind later on their lives as a result of an infection such as meningitis.
